Antiquarian Booksellers at the Helsinki Book Fair
At the Helsinki Book Fair, visitors can explore not only new releases but also the offerings of antiquarian booksellers. The popular antiquarian book area showcases the collections of 35 antiquarian booksellers at once — treasures, collectibles and classics from the world of second-hand books. Every year, the area draws large crowds of book lovers to browse the groaning bookshelves, with around 100,000 titles on sale. It’s well worth setting aside plenty of time for a visit!
On offer is a wide range of well-loved books, spanning everything from fiction to non-fiction. Visitors may find exactly what they’re looking for, or discover books they never knew they needed. Books are usually arranged by subject and, where possible, in alphabetical order. Staff are also happy to help.
The Finnish Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association’s (Suomen Antikvariaattiyhdistys) stand includes a book valuation point, staffed on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 15:00. As always, guidance on old and rare books will also be available.
The stand features an exhibition on American underground literature
The Beat movement emerged in the United States in the aftermath of the Second World War. Disillusionment and disappointment with the advance of science and technocracy led a young generation to create its own rules — and to begin living on the margins of society.
The leading figures of the Beat movement in San Francisco were Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. They were soon joined by a large number of other avant-garde writers, poets, visual artists and filmmakers.
Modern jazz acted as a catalyst and was an integral part of the Beat movement. This counterculture attracted rebellious young people who had rejected the mainstream, bourgeois values of society.
Today, the leading figures of the Beat movement are counted among the icons of American counterculture and are regarded as some of the most influential figures in twentieth-century American culture. The classics of Beat literature, published in the 1950s, now belong to the canon of modern American literature. And, most importantly, the Beat movement continues to inspire younger generations with its candour and courage.
A Time-Honoured Event
The Antiquarian Book Fair has a tradition spanning more than twenty years. Held annually alongside the Helsinki Book Fair, it is organised in partnership with the Finnish Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (Suomen Antikvariaattiyhdistys).
What began as an event for a small circle of collectors, drawing just over a thousand visitors, has grown into a major undertaking and a significant part of the Helsinki Book Fair. An increasingly fast-paced media landscape and more efficient stock management by publishers mean that new books have an ever-shorter shelf life. Visitors come to the antiquarian book area in search of titles no longer sold in bookshops. Some are collectors, but the majority are readers who come to find something good to read and to enjoy immersing themselves in old books.
